U.S.-EU: shared priorities

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Projected dramatic increases in energy consumption in the coming decades, combined with a higher risk of climate change, require a massive global response based on technological innovation and the power of the marketplace. Ensuring access to ample, affordable, clean, and sustainable sources of energy is unquestionably one of the greatest challenges facing the modern world. The U.S. government and America's private sector and nongovernmental organizations are confronting it by building on a long tradition of clean energy research to develop transformational technologies that will reduce our reliance on oil and have far-reaching benefits for the entire world. By embracing the energy challenge, the United States is working to promote energy security, reduce poverty, reduce harmful air pollution, and address climate change.

President Bush and Chancellor Merkel Discuss Climate Change
Washington, January 4, 2006 -- President Bush welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel back to the White House on January 4, 2007. The visit provided the two leaders an opportunity to continue their close consultations. The German role in dealing with global challenges will be especially important in 2007 as Germany assumed the presidencies of both the European Union and G-8 on January 1. One of the topics of discussion between President Bush and Chancellor Merkel was climate change
President Bush said that the United States is "committed to promoting new technologies that will promote energy efficiency, and at the same time doing a better job of protecting the world's environment." The President believes "there's a chance now to put behind us the old, stale debates of the past and focus on technological developments that will enable us to be good stewards of the environment, and at the same time enable us to become less dependent on oil and hydrocarbons from parts of the world that may not like us." He said, "Here in the United States, we're going full-steam ahead with new technologies that will change the way we drive our cars and power our homes and light our streets.” Fulltext
