Europe: The Realization of a Dream
March 25, 2007. The German capital celebrated the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. To mark the occasion, the U.S. Embassy placed a large banner at the site of its future home on Pariser Platz next to the Brandenburg Gate. The American Embassy in Berlin applauds the first 50 years of the European Union and wishes it well for the next 50 years.

March 19, 2007. Secretary Rice: We live in a world in which we face small nuclear threats, small potential missile threats from, for instance, Iran. And a limited missile defense that can deal with small threats is very much a stabilizing factor, not a destabilizing factor. We are working with our allies, including with Poland and the Czech Republic to talk about what kind of deployment makes sense. [And] we have talked to the Russians repeatedly starting in the spring of 2006 about what this would mean. more

March 2, 2007. Washington – The United States and the European Union (EU) have achieved a breakthrough in talks on a long-sought agreement to liberalize the trans-Atlantic air transportation market. U.S. and EU negotiators initialed the deal in Brussels, Belgium, March 2, ending a controversy about foreign control of U.S. airlines that threatened to unravel the pact. The Bush administration has welcomed the tentative agreement. U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said it “will offer more choice and convenience to American consumers, promote new growth in our aviation industry and support our continued economic expansion.” more

Secretary Rice met with the Middle East Quartet in Berlin to discuss the recent agreement reached by the Palestinian government in Saudi Arabia and the next steps in the implementing the Road Map. The Secretary was traveling to Iraq, Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Amman, Jordan; and Berlin, Germany; February 16 – 22, 2007. In Jerusalem she held bilateral meetings with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders, as well as a trilateral meeting with President Abbas and Prime Minister Olmert on February 19. In Amman Secretary Rice met with the King Abdullah of Jordan and other members of the Jordanian government. more

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Kurt Volker delivered remarks on climate change and energy in Berlin. He underscored that the U.S. and Europe share a common objective in the reduction of greenhouse gases. "There are multiple means for getting there. The United States is deeply committed to the objective of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and we have a set of policies and concrete actions that are producing good, concrete results – now and in the future," he said. more

In November the European Commission issued a report on the dangers of spam. It read that between 50 and 80% of all e-mails are spam and that 1 in 5 of the spam e-mails come from the United States. Spam is definitely an international problem that must be addressed through international cooperation.

January 8, 2007. Washington, DC - United States and European Union (EU) trade officials report progress in efforts to revive stalled talks toward a new global trade liberalization accord. Senior Diplomat Previews U.S.-Europe Relations for 2007
December 12, 2006. Washington, DC - The United States and European nations will continue to work together closely to advance freedom, security and democracy in “far-flung” regions well beyond the traditional borders of Europe, a senior U.S. diplomat says, previewing U.S.-European relations for 2007. Daniel Fried, assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, met with reporters December 12 at the State Department to discuss trans-Atlantic cooperation in Afghanistan and Iraq, the status of the Kosovo province of Serbia, U.S. relations with Russia and other issues.

U.S., EU, Others Sign ITER Fusion Energy Agreement
November 21, 2006. Officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and their counterparts from China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation signed an agreement November 21 to build the international fusion energy reactor known as ITER. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor is a joint international research and development project meant to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of using the power of nuclear fusion – the process of combining the nuclei of two atoms – as an energy source to meet growing world demand. more

U.S., EU Hold Informal Economic Ministerial

November 11, 2006. Washington - The United States and the European Union held their second informal economic ministerial meeting in Washington November 9 to address issues of trans-Atlantic economic integration and mutual economic challenges. The meeting followed up on the commitments made at the U.S.-EU summit in June 2005 and confirmed at the 2006 summit.  The first informal economic ministerial was held in Brussels in November of last year. more

United States and European Union Sign Agreement to Improve Joint Efforts to Combat Transnational Crime
November 7, 2006. Washington – Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales announced on Monday that the United States signed an Executive Agreement with Eurojust, the judicial cooperation unit of the European Union (E.U.), which will improve transatlantic law enforcement coordination and enhance the ability of the U.S. and the E.U. to fight international crime. The Agreement will foster the exchange of information between law enforcement communities in the U.S. and the E.U. and will strengthen cooperative efforts to prevent and prosecute organized crime, human trafficking, cybercrime and terrorism. more

James L. Connaughton, Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality addresses Expert Audience in Berlin
October 27, 2006. During a visit to Berlin on October 27, the chief environmental policy advisor to the President, James L. Connaughton, discussed U.S. climate change policy with representatives of the German government and other environmental experts. Speaking at an event at the Friedrich Ebert-Foundation on "Current Environmental and Energy Policy Issues in the United States and Germany," he explained the Bush Administration's National Energy Plan and Comprehensive Climate Strategy, putting it in the context of worldwide economic developments and international climate change efforts. He also addressed U.S. environmental objectives for the G-8 summit in Germany next year. more
